Lecture: Singing Like a Sailor: Towards an Ethnography of a Dutch Shanty Choir

The shanty choir is an ubiquitous phenomenon in the Netherlands and the North of Germany. Posing the standard anthropological question “What the hell is going on here?”, Evert Bisschop Boele will share intermediate research findings stemming from his ethnographical research into one particular choir near Groningen. In doing that, he will also reflect on ethnographic research methods, trying to unravel the value of participant observation when studying one’s own culture.
