Music Matters Study Day – People

PRESENTERS:

holtFabian Holt is associate professor at Roskilde University, where he teaches in the Department of Communication and Business. He studied music history, with a concentration in jazz and American music, before joining Roskilde where he expanded his disciplinary expertise into the sociology of live music and cultural events. Holt was a post-doctoral fellow at The University of Chicago 2003-2004 and a visiting scholar at Columbia University in 2011. He has done fieldwork in Berlin, Chicago, and New York, among other places. His publications include Genre in Popular Music (Chicago, 2007) and the two co-edited volumes on music Musical Performance and the Changing City (with Carsten Wergin) and Popular Music in the Nordic Countries (with Antti-Ville Kärjä).

lieke_dec_14Lieke Wijnia (1985) is a PhD candidate at Tilburg University. Her project examines the notion of sacrality in contemporary culture, for which she conducts fieldwork at the arts festival Musica Sacra Maastricht. Furthermore she works on a research project on the positioning of the Vatican in the contemporary art world. She gained a MA in Cultural Heritage from Utrecht University and a MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute, London.

 

 

Kristingreenpiano_smallKristin McGee is an Associate Professor of Popular Music in the Arts, Culture and Media Department at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. She has written on the subject of jazz, gender and popular music and audio visual media within a variety of articles and books, including her manuscript Some Liked it Hot: Jazz Women in Film and Television, 1928-1959 (Wesleyan University Press 2009). She is currently completing a manuscript on the crossover jazz scenes of the Netherlands. She is also a saxophonist and sometimes theater music composer.

 

Luis Headshots - 15Luis-Manuel Garcia is Assistant Professor of Popular Music at the University of Groningen. He is conducting research in Berlin on nightlife-related tourism in the city and its impact on local music scenes. He is also working on a manuscript entitled, Together, Somehow: Music, Affect, and Intimacy on the Dance Floor.

 

 

Sybrith TiekstraSybrith Tiekstra is an MA Arts, Culture and Media (RUG) graduate and is currently interning at the cultural policy department at the Provincie Drenthe. Her research focuses on popular music festivals and music communities against the backdrop of a digitalizing society. She is interested in the virtual and physical dimensions of collective music appreciation and the enactment of musical identities. At the moment she is involved in a project on music festivals as sites for technological innovation.

 

 

PANELISTS:

chris-festival1Chris Garrit has been a professional guitarist with several bands. Currently he also works in a variety of capacities including as cultural entrepreneur, designer, and producer of several music festivals. In 2007 he organized the first Gideon Music Festival. Other festivals he has helped to organize are Groningsch Peil and PSY-FI. He is currently active setting up the innovative city venue EMG Faktors. In 2011, he was chosen by several cultural participants as the first Night Mayor of Groningen. In 2013, he was once again democratically elected for this position. Since then he has organized evening debates over subjects related to nightlife, music, leisure and the arts. He continues to lobby for a broad range of cultural productions in the province of Groningen. Through these activities Garrit strives to organize and facilitate music in the North Netherlands culture – especially through a life-long love of music.

RuchtieNext to his position as city music programmer for Groningen, Joey Ruchtie curates stages for various local music events. In particular, he programmes the Dutch line-up for the annual Eurosonic/Nooderslag music festival as well as contributes acts for various festivals including Bijvrijdingsfestival Groningen, Paaspop Schijndel and Metropolis in Rotterdam.

 

 

Bram NigtenBram Nigten holds a master degree in Culture, Arts and Media, specialising in music production and music technology. During the last five years, he has been an active player in the Dutch indie music scene, organising shows with Amsterdam-based underground music platform Subbacultcha, and playing various venues and festivals as drummer of noise-rock band WOLVON. He is currently focusing his attention on building and designing guitar and vocal effects pedals.

 

JelleJelle Agema is the marketing manager for the Incubate festival in Tilburg. Together with a highly motivated team he works to attract participants and fans to this multi-disciplinary festival. Thousands of people from all over the globe visit Incubate in the third week of September. Jelle is a freelancer who has also worked for Subbacultcha, Sonic Acts, STRP and others.
